Scope

Ground-Penetrating Radar Detection of Buried Infrastructure at an International Airport

Airports are among the most densely serviced sites in engineering: fuel lines, power and communications ducts, drainage, lighting circuits and older, undocumented structures lie beneath live aprons and taxiways, and any strike during works stops operations. TDS carried out a ground-penetrating radar survey across the working areas to detect and map buried utilities and infrastructure, using multi-frequency antennas for depth and resolution, precise positioning tied to the airport grid, and processing that distinguishes metallic and non-metallic services from fill and pavement layers. The deliverable was a georeferenced map and depth model of everything found, including services absent from the as-built drawings.

Outcome

What the platform delivers

  • A verified picture of the buried infrastructure delivered without excavation or interruption to operations, allowing works to be planned around what is actually in the ground.
